How to Qualify for Points If you wish to participate in the Ouachita Mountains Glider Gliding Series, please contact The PG Task Master, Britton Shaw, by e-mail and provide your Name, USHPA Rating and type of glider(s) you will be flying. Fly your solo paraglider from any of the designated sites in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas or Oklahoma, and that flight may be eligible for points. Flight must have followed all FAA Regulations. No flying through restricted airspace illegally, and no IFR flights, no flights after dark. There is no entry fee, no waiver, no hassle. Take a look at THE TASKS below.
The Flying Sites The Following Gliding Sites can gain you points for your flight if that flight fulfills any of the specific tasks listed below.
- Mt. Magazine – P3 w/instructor, or P4
- Mt. Nebo – P2 w/instructor endorsement (NE Launch), or P4
- Panorama Vista – P2 w/instructor, or P4
- Heavener – P2 at SW launch, and P2 instructor endorsement for SSE launch

- Short Mountain – P2
- Little Yancey – P2 w/instructor, or P3
Some Tasks are awarded weighted points for handicapping according to Pilot Rating and/or according to Glider Rating.
On Your Honor All flight reports are on the honor system. Some flights will require instrument verification (Altitude, FAI Triangles). Your Word is your Honor. I encourage you to make every effort to be precise with your timing and distance calculations. If in doubt, ask for assistance in determining you flight goal, and always round down... not up.
The Tasks
P1 and P2 only Training Hill Flights These flights are typically flown at the Bellville or Red Oak training hills. A “flight” is one that begins at the top and ends at the bottom.
First Solo Flight of 15 minutes or more (Available only once).
Personal Duration Task The Flight Duration task awards points for your personal best duration in the Ouachita Mountains. This means that you will be awarded points based on your longest duration throughout the whole season. This can be from any of the listed launch sites in the Ouachita Mountains. Points are weighted for handicapping according to Pilot Rating and are awarded at 1 hour achievement intervals. All pilots having a flight longer than 1 hour will be awarded points based on the Handicapping. Report your best duration and I will do the math. If you beat your duration at a later date, simply report that flight and I will update your score.
Mile High Club Points will be awarded for an altitude of 1 mile above sea level, 1 1/2 mile above sea level or 2 miles above sea level. Achieve an altitude of over 5280 ft above sea level, from any of the listed launch sites and you will be awarded points that are handicapped accordingly. Simply report your altitude and I will do the math. If you become a member of the “Mile High Club” and later, achieve the 1 1/2 mile, let me know and I will update your score. The score is not accumulative. The higher score will replace the lower score.
Open Distance Flight Personal Longest Distance Flights will be awarded points weighted for handicapping according to wing type(see bottom of document). Points can be awarded to every pilot that completes any of these Tasks. Only your longest flight will count for scoring for each site. This means you can have multiple scores for Open Distance. For example, get a 10 mile flight at Heavener, and you can still pursue Open Distance points at any other mountain. Declare your Goal prior to flight and you will get a 25% bonus on your score. You must land within 1 mile radius of your declared LZ goal. If the conditions are epic, and you feel you can continue further than declared goal, you lose the ‘declared’ bonus but gain additional xc mileage points.
Out and Return XC Points Personal Longest Out and Return Flights Points will be awarded points weighted for handicapping according to wing type. (Points can be awarded to every pilot that completes any of these Tasks) Flight will be measured as the shorter of the distance from Turnpoint to Launch, or Turnpoint to Landing (at a normal LZ for the site). Times two of course, since the distance was covered twice. (Points can be awarded to every pilot that completes one of these Tasks)
Established Goal Flight Established Goal Flights from and to the following destinations will be awarded points weighted for handicapping according to wing type. (Points can be awarded to every pilot that completes one of these Tasks) No pre-declaration is required for these flights.
See the Series Tasks Page to see the Established Goals.
Triangle Tasks A GPS with uploading capability to Leonardo is mandatory for this task. Complete any Triangle flight, at any of our sites, no matter the length, and you will be awarded points. Points will be awarded for each task accomplished. You can fly the triangle in any direction. Your best triangle flown at each site will be scored. See example triangle here: Region 6 Triangle - Heavener
Number of Sites Flown The more Sites you fly, the more points you will score at the end of the season. So even if it is a sled run, it will boost your score at the end of the season.
Total Number of Flights 5 through 60 flights, 10-600 points (training hill flights do not count. A flight is a sled ride, or greater, from one of the designated mountain sites.
Reporting your Flight
- You are highly encouraged to fly with a Garmin GPS or Flytec GPS/Vario combination (our award sponsors!). These devices allow you to upload your flight for review, in 3D, and automatically scored at the www.ParaglidingForum.com website.
- Report flights that are eligible in a timely manner. It is only fair that the other pilots see the mark that they are striving for.
- Report any flight that may be eligible for points to me by E-mail or by way of the Region 6 Forum. Region 6 forum is preferred.

Glider Ratings - As of 2010, you will see the term LTF more and more, instead of DHV or EN. This simply refers to the airworthiness standards that DHV/EN is testing for. However, in future, other organizations may be authorized to conduct the same tests and publish the results. Hence it makes sense now to refer to the standard itself, rather than the testing organization. For example, the entry-level wing will be an LTF 1 paraglider instead of a DHV-1or EN-A paraglider.
The majority of paraglider wings flown in our region are of the split level (beginner/intermediate). For the purposes of our paragliding series, should a glider be rated as a 1/2, A/B, C, 2/3, we will always score against the highest rate. So, for those of you that fly DHV1/2 gliders, your flight will be categorized as LTF2. For those that fly a DHV2/3, your flight will be categorized as LTF3. Also, for the purposes of this series, the new Ozone carbon paraglider will be considered a ‘Comp’ glider.
Triangles - GPS must produce .igc file that can be uploaded to the ‘Leonardo’ website. Leonardo will calculate and score the triangle flown. The PG Taskmaster will calculate-in the glider rating multiplier, and the score will be posted.
